Finding motivation and climbing the ladder of success [lockdown edition]

24th March 2021

Lockdown has been a tough time for everyone. It’s invoked a range of feelings that may not have been there before and has made us, as humans, question many different things... not to mention the anxiety it’s given us surrounding interaction with other human being's post-lockdown. But now that the rules are starting to relax, it’s important to find support and support each other whilst working from home or heading back to the workplace. Each of our meanings of ‘success’ may be different but the steps are pretty much the same.

We want to give you some pointers on how to reach your goals from home and motivate you to not give up, especially within your own 4 walls. Take small steps and success will be yours.

The first step to reaching success, and possibly one of the most important, is finding your motivation. What motivates you? Is it your family? Is it money? Is it a sense of accomplishment? Is it personal to you? Whatever it is, keep it close. Write it down every now and again, remember why you started in the first place, and if you’ve already beaten a target you set, find another! Motivation is crucial because it allows us to keep a focus. It means we can set, and in turn, achieve our goals.

You may be thinking, ‘but that’s the problem!’ Finding and keeping motivation can be difficult. That’s why we’ve come up with some examples to help:

  • Create a morning routine that you enjoy waking up to (e. g. morning stretches, morning walk, coffee in bed, a bath, yoga)
  • Eat the frog. The frog is that one thing you have on your to-do list that you always try to avoid; the task that you're most likely to procrastinate on. Eating the frog means, (like the Nike phrase), ‘just do it!’ -otherwise the frog will eat you, meaning that you'll end up procrastinating.
  • Go for walks in-between working, fresh air is important
  • Remember your motivation and focus on it! Write it down, put it on the wall, set it as your screensaver! If you go to scroll through your phone and procrastinate, you’ll see your motivation and it will help you retrieve your focus.
  • Set goals but make these small and digestible. If you try to overachieve, you may get downhearted or lose interest. Stay interested and reward yourself in-between reaching these little goals.

I asked the team here at Foxwood, what motivates you?

Jonathan: “Being successful and having a work- life balance”

Vicki: “Renovating my house” “I exercise and that always motivates me”

Alex: “Getting better every day

Sophie: “Improving my skillset and building myself up to be independent and successful”

These may also resonate with you.

Once you have found your motivation, utilise this into the 5 laws of success.

You wouldn’t drive a car without knowing the driving regulations and the meaning of road signs; or try to fix the electricity if you have no idea which wire means what...  So why would you try to succeed without knowing the basics of success? If climbing the ladder of success is what you desire, apply the following:

  1. The law of desire - "If you want something badly enough you will get it"
  2. The law of belief - "Anything you believe to be true will be your reality" If you believe you can, then you will. Desire is a force that cannot be easily stopped.
  3. The law of positive attitude - "The way we think is the way we perform" Stay productive, stay focused and believe in your abilities.

Attitude is everything. If you’re being negative, you feel negative in all realms of life, you don’t enjoy work and you will lose motivation. Here’s some tips on how to maintain a positive attitude:

  • Listen to yourself
  • Get enough sleep
  • Put things into perspective
  • Take regular breaks

4. The law of persistence - “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again”. Don’t give up. Conquer everything!

5. The law of goal setting - "There is no achievement without goals" (Robert J. Mckain)

We understand how easy it can be to give up. But, if you want something badly enough, then quitting is not an option. Your desire and belief will drive your success and push you to excel. You can do this! If you aren’t sure if your desire is strong enough, try noting down all of the reasons why you want to achieve your goal. List all the benefits you can imagine. The more benefits, the stronger your desire will get. It’s great practise to list your benefits every morning or at the beginning of each week; you will stay connected with your goal during the day and you'll be more motivated. Set the goal, achieve the goal.
